From the moment I met Bernadette and Anthony I knew that I had met a really special couple. Bernadette is an incredibly warm and beautiful woman. She spoke so positively about birth, filled with an innate wisdom that her body would bring her baby into the world in the perfect fashion.
With a history of a 38 weeker, Bernadette thought this second babe would do something similar. The weeks went by and no sign of this little one. I spoke to her on the 15th of May and she said she would have her waters broken the following day. Heading off to bed I was so excited that tomorrow I would be photographing a birth. This little one had different ideas though and in the early hours of May 16th, I received a text from her saying she thought her waters had broken and she was getting some irregular tightenings. Knowing that the hospital was over an hour away and this was a second babe I suggested I slowly make my way down to the Randwick Birth Centre.
I was so excited on the journey down. I really am living my dream, photographing women on the most spectacular journey. I have to pinch myself sometimes that couples invite me into such an intimate and special occasion with my camera, this is my dream job. Working as a midwife is incredibly special but women need a care provider, a photographer on the other hand is different. I am an ‘extra’ in the scheme of things and feel even more honoured than in my role as midwife.
I arrived at the hospital in just over an hour. I casually found a car park and walked up to the birthing suite. I knew that Bernadette and Anthony had arrived but if I knew what was going on I probably would have been a little more rushed in the process.
As I put one foot in the door Bec the midwife said ‘Head is on view’. There was no time to settle in and capture the mood it was straight into business.
10 minutes later in the most calm and serene fashion precious little Scarlett Grace made her gentle appearance into the world. I was photographing her birth from behind as her head and body made its decent and as she was passed through to Bernadette I had to leap over furniture to photograph the first meeting. Bernadette swiftly leant back on the bean bag embracing her precious precious babe. A few minutes later we still didn’t know her gender. I’ll never forget the beaming excitement of Bernadette as she said “shall we find out what we have”. Together Anthony and Bernadette pulled back the blanket to reveal a precious girl. Bernadette beamed from ear to ear and Anthony’s reaction had me in stitches, equally excited with a look of .. goodness me, 3 women in the house!!
I always feel incredibly blessed to witness and capture births, and this birth was no different. Thank you Bernadette and Anthony. I loved journeying with you. I hope these images bring back many many emotional and wonderful memories as you reflect on your precious little lady’s birth in the years to come.
