The Incredible Placenta

I’m not sure if it is the midwife in me or not, but gee I find placenta’s so incredible. I remember as a student midwife always getting the job of inspecting the placenta and seeing if it was complete or not. Most parents would start out hesitant as I encouraged them to look but as I’d run through the names of what we were looking at, that hesitancy quickly morphed into a ‘wow’ as I explained the intricacies of it and how this organ supported the growth of their precious newborn babe for the past 40 or so weeks.

It is not surprising then for me as a photographer to don a pair of gloves and use my creativity to photograph the placenta and give it the true honour that it deserves when capturing it. I’m always facinated that although all placentas carry out the same function and have the same ‘parts’ they are all unique and diverse in their own special way.

Here are some of my favourite placenta shots that I have taken over the years.
